Reviving Tradition: Annual Kimchi-Making Event Brings Heritage and Community Together in Busan
In today’s fast-paced world, some traditional practices are at risk of fading away, and kimchi-making is no exception. Once a routine in every Korean household, the art of kimchi-making has become less common among younger generations. However, in Busan, we’ve proudly kept this tradition alive, not only celebrating Korean heritage but also giving back to the local community through our annual kimchi-making event.
Our team in Busan.
This year, our Busan team came together to prepare and share a remarkable 840 kilograms of kimchi for the underprivileged members of our community. This tradition has grown to be a valued event on our calendar, a day when we step away from our usual work to roll up our sleeves, honor our roots, and strengthen our community ties. Preparing kimchi in large quantities requires teamwork, patience, and care. Layer by layer, as we coated each cabbage with the traditional spicy mix, we were reminded of our childhood memories, when families would gather to prepare and preserve kimchi for the winter. The process brought out stories, laughter, and a renewed connection to the past, underscoring just how meaningful this tradition is to our identity.
After brining the cabbages, we dissect them before spreading the kimchi mix.
By involving our team in this hands-on activity, we aim to bridge the gap between generations and reintroduce the art of kimchi-making to those who may have never experienced it. It’s a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving heritage in our rapidly changing world. More importantly, it allows us to serve the community in a tangible way, making sure our contributions reach those who need it most.
Making kimchi is laborious and an art to perfect, our team puts in their best effort to achieve a delicious result.
Kimchi is more than a food; it’s a symbol of Korean resilience, unity, and cultural pride. Each year, as we continue this tradition, we not only strengthen our connection to our roots but also make a positive impact where we work and live. We’re grateful to have the opportunity to contribute in such a meaningful way, serving the community that supports us and carrying forward a beautiful tradition.
