Sustainability report 2018
Sustainability is integral to how we run our business. We recognise that sustainability risks could reduce our ability to generate value. We also understand that there are real business opportunities for our group to provide sustainable solutions for our customers and stakeholders. Our employees are at the frontline of making this happen.
-
Health and safety
We believe that an engaging and safe working environment at sea and on shore is a prerequisite to an efficient, sustainable and profitable business. We conduct our business with respect for human rights and labour standards, including conventions and guidelines related to the prevention of child or forced labour, minimum wage and salary, working conditions and freedom of association.
-
Ethics and anti-corruption
We have clear policies on ethics and anti-corruption. We do not tolerate any form of corruption, and we expect all employees to live up to the high ethical standards we lay down in our governing documents and Code of Conduct. Business standards work is ongoing and constant, and our various stakeholders depend on us being a transparent and compliant partner.
-
Responsible procurement
We need to continuously work with our suppliers to ensure our sustainability expectations are clear and that products and services are compliant with our standards.
-
Cyber security
The increase in cyber security threats has made it extremely important to manage this as an integrated part of doing business. We are seeing that big players in the maritime industry require that we have state of the art security mechanisms to meet the new generation of threats. A professional approach to cyber security can become one of Wilhelmsen’s competitive advantages.
-
Employees
We recognise that retaining and attracting talent is key to ensure future growth and essential for delivering on our long-term strategic ambitions. In our daily operations, we continuously work to provide an engaging and safe work environment where equal opportunities are available for all. We want our employees to come home safely every day after work.
-
Environment
As a global company with thousands of employees spread across the world, we have an opportunity to continuously work towards reducing the environmental footprint of our own operations and that of our customers.
-
Sustainable innovation
As a shaper of the maritime industry, we understand the need to innovate and capitalise on both new technology and new ways of working. We might not be a technology company, but we use technology to improve our business offerings and create new methods for how the maritime industry operates. Everything we do is related to how we are enabling global sustainable trade.
-
Local community engagement
Wilhelmsen has a history for supporting academia, environmental and humanitarian organisations, research institutions, as well as culture and sporting events. These initiatives are coordinated by our local offices around the globe and by the Tom Wilhelmsen Foundation.
