Wilhelmsen Ships Service is pleased to announce its participation to RightShip’s Zero Harm Innovation Partners Program. As a leading maritime solution provider, our participation in this program exemplifies our commitment to safer mooring practices.

RightShip is a leading global Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) focused digital maritime platform with the mission to drive operational improvements in the global shipping industry and improve overall maritime safety standards.

The Zero Harm Innovation Partners Program aims to promote the development and implementation of innovative technologies and solutions to achieve a zero-harm maritime industry. As part of this program, Wilhelmsen Ships Service will showcase its high-performance mooring products, the Timm Snap Back Arrestor (SBA™) rope and the Line Management Plan (LMP™).

Working towards safer mooring

Mooring operations present significant safety challenges. The number of mooring-related incidents has risen, with an increase in reported accidents in ports such as Rotterdam from 122 in 2020 to 159 in 2023. These incidents often result in injuries and highlight the need for improved safety measures.

“Being a part of RightShip’s Zero Harm Innovation Partners Program is a testament to Wilhelmsen Ships Service's dedication to enhancing mooring safety standards in the maritime industry. Our aim is to drive a positive change in the maritime industry and collaborate with other partners in the program to find ways to improve safety at sea", said Thomas Caradec, Product Management and Planning Director, Mooring Solutions at Wilhelmsen Ships Service.

Wilhelmsen Ships Service is committed to mitigating mooring-related risks through a comprehensive approach incorporating both active and passive safety measures. The Line Management Plan (LMP™) aims to reduce the probability of accidents, while the Snap Back Arrestor (SBA™) focuses on minimizing the severity of risks in the event of an accident. Together, these measures ensure robust and holistic mooring safety.

The world's first and only snap-back rope

The Timm Snap Back Arrestor (SBA™) rope is the world’s first and only anti snap-back rope qualified by DNV. It is designed to reduce the snap back effect and provide safe mooring operations for crew members. The innovative design of the SBA centres around its energy absorption capabilities, where the SBA core functions as a non-load-bearing component during normal rope operation. In the event of a load-bearing construction break, the SBA core partially absorbs the snap back energy, resulting in a substantial reduction of snap back forces.

Insights into rope usage and maintenance

The Line Management Plan (LMP™) simplifies rope management by documenting evaluation methods and requirements for determining line retirement criteria. This cloud-based platform provides real-time insights into rope usage and maintenance, acting as a digital logbook for storing rope certificates, managing inventory, and accessing inspection history. The LMP™ application can help customers get a holistic overview of all ropes onboard and a history of their usage and inspections, which can be used to ensure compliance with safety regulations. The LMP™ application was developed following the introduction of updated Mooring Equipment Guidelines (MEG4) by the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) to provide ship operators with a comprehensive tool to manage their mooring lines inventory.

"By connecting solution providers with owner, managers and promoting them to the charterers, the RightShip Zero Harm Innovation Partners Program fosters a collaborative ecosystem that encourages adoption of new technologies and recognises those who invest in safety and sustainability on board vessels.” Said Ajinkya Kadam, Head of Partnerships at RightShip.
