Basic Hydraulics Workshop (HYDM)

In view of the enormous use of hydraulic equipment and systems on board all types of vessels and the operation of such systems by Navigating Officers, it is imperative that they possess sufficient knowledge of the subject to enable them to operate these systems safely and efficiently.

Covering aspects of shipboard hydraulics at an operational level, this workshop provides a forum for theory lecture delivery, hands on training, group discussions leading to improvement in competency and confidence in operating hydraulic equipment in a correct manner.

Extensive exposure to hydraulic systems is provided with several Tanker vessel shipboard circuits being traced. Thus, the ability to trace, understand and analyze circuit drawings and to troubleshoot logically is gained by the participant.

The practical exercises performed on the hydraulic trainer panel further strengthen his ability to understand hydraulic principles, functioning of various components and also to troubleshoot faults logically.

This 3-day course forms the initial part of the six-day Advanced Hydraulic Course for Engineer Officers. It allows useful interaction between navigation and engineer officers with regard to hydraulic equipment.

Course Objective:The objective of the course is to:

  • To understand the fundamental concepts of hydraulics.
  • To recognize component symbols and their construction, functioning and applications.
  • To identify symbols, trace and analyze cargo valve / deck machinery circuit diagrams.
  • To learn through sharing of experiences amongst participants

Suggested Target Group: Navigation Officers (Master, C/O, 2/O, 3/O,3/E,4/E and J/E)

Course Contents:

  • Introduction to fundamental concepts of hydraulics
  • Components of hydraulic systems and their representative symbols (ISO 1219) in circuit drawings
  • Pressure, Direction and Flow Control valves and their applications at an operational level
  • Hydraulic oil, reservoirs and filters – functions and importance, ISO 4406 / 11171 and NAS contaminant codes
  • Common problems with pumps – cavitation / aeration, causes and demonstration of the same.
  • Circuit tracing of Tanker vessels and familiarization with cargo valve operating systems (AMRI / NAKAKITA), usual problems and causes.
  • Circuit tracing Tanker vessels and familiarization with Deck machinery operating systems, usual problems and causes.
  • Accumulators – various types, care of, assembling and charging procedure
  • Safety precautions and good watchkeeping practices
  • Practical demonstration of various hydraulic equipment – Direction / Pressure & Flow control valves, Pumps, Filters and Accumulators etc.
  • Practical exercises on the Trainer Panel – Use of various components to form working circuits and locate faults induced therein.
  • Have added several additional components (different types of Direction Control Valves, Pumps and Actuator) for demo.
  • AMRI or NAKAKITA cargo valve (with hydraulic actuator) for practical demonstration.

Note : This course forms the first 3 days of the 6 day HYDE course for Engineers.
