However, navigating in areas of ice concentrations and sub-zero temperatures remains fraught with risks – from damage to the Vessel’s hull, propellers and rudder, to collisions and contacts, and most of all, being beset or aground in ice. The skill-sets necessary for navigating vessels in ice conditions, and handling vessels designed to operate in such areas is remarkably different from the normal ship-handling skills. Sailing in convoys, working with Ice-breakers, providing or receiving assistance in ice conditions, make this aspect of navigation challenging even for experienced navigators. A thorough understanding of the various types of ice, own vessel’s capabilities in ice, ship-handling techniques, as well as the human factors affecting performance in harsh winter conditions is essential for ensuring safe passage of the vessel across ice-bound routes.
IMTC has designed and developed a Course on “Ice Navigation” that specifically addresses the above issues. In addition to imparting the requisite knowledge on the subject, the Course gives the participants an (simulated) experience of navigating through ice, by way of a practical exercise in ice navigation on a state of-the-art Kongsberg 'K-SIM Polaris' Full – Mission Ship’s Bridge Simulator. The course is based on IMO Model Course 7.11 Basic Training for Ships Operating in Polar Waters.

Objectives:
To enable safe navigation of vessels through an understanding of the unique environment and ship handling in ice conditions.
To understand the human factors affecting the performance of navigators operating under ice conditions.
