Mooring rope abrasion remains one of the most common and most underestimated causes of premature rope failure in vessel operations. While often treated as a routine maintenance issue, abrasion sits at the intersection of equipment condition, operational practices, crew awareness, and vessel vetting outcomes. When unmanaged, it increases safety risk, shortens rope lifespan, and can compromise a vessel’s acceptance by terminals and charterers.
Recent inspection and terminal data confirm that abrasion is not an isolated technical concern, but a systemic operational challenge across global fleets.
